Blackout Curtains vs Blackout Blinds: Which Works Best?

If you want to make a bedroom darker, the obvious question is usually:
Should I choose blackout curtains or blackout blinds?
The answer depends less on which product has “blackout” written on the label and more on how dark you actually need the room to be.
That distinction matters.
A blackout fabric can stop light passing through the material, but light can still enter around the edges of the finished installation. Curtains and blinds deal with those gaps differently, which is why two products using blackout fabric can give noticeably different results.
In Abu Dhabi, there is another consideration too. Strong sunlight through large windows can affect glare and heat as well as sleep and privacy. DEWA recommends using curtains, blinds and other shading during summer to reduce heat entering through windows.
So which works best?
Let's look at the complete window rather than just the fabric.
Start by Deciding How Dark You Actually Need the Room
One of the first questions we would ask is:
“What does blackout mean to you?”
For one customer, it means reducing early morning sunlight enough to sleep comfortably.
For another, even a narrow line of light around the window is frustrating.
That second requirement is much harder to achieve with a standard window covering.
We often see customers focus entirely on the fabric sample. They'll hold a blackout material towards the light, see that nothing passes through it and understandably assume the finished room will behave the same way.
But the fabric is only one part of the installation.
Light may still enter:
- above or below the window covering;
- around the sides;
- between curtain panels;
- around a roller blind mechanism;
- where the product doesn't extend far enough beyond the opening.
This is why we prefer to understand the required result before recommending either curtains or blinds.
A normal bedroom, nursery, home cinema and bedroom used by someone working night shifts may all require different levels of room darkening.
How Blackout Curtains Work
Blackout curtains use fabric or lining designed to prevent light passing through the curtain itself.
Their main advantage is coverage.
Because curtains can extend well beyond the sides and bottom of the window, they have the potential to cover more of the surrounding opening than a standard roller blind.
They can also overlap in the centre and be positioned close to the wall, helping reduce some of the light entering around the edges.
For bedrooms where a darker result is important, this can be a major advantage.
Curtains also create a softer, fuller appearance. In a master bedroom or villa with large floor-to-ceiling glazing, that may suit the room better than a blind on its own.
The trade-off is that they occupy more space and become a much more visible part of the interior.
Fabric choice, fullness, track position and the width and drop of the finished curtains all influence the result.
If blackout performance matters, the curtain should therefore be designed around the window rather than simply ordered to match its dimensions.
How Blackout Roller Blinds Work
A blackout roller blind takes a different approach.
The fabric rolls neatly around a tube above the window, giving a much cleaner and more compact finish.
This can be ideal where you don't want curtains taking up wall space or where the interior calls for something simple.
The blackout fabric prevents light passing directly through the material.
The important limitation is at the edges.
A normal roller blind needs clearance between the fabric and the brackets or mechanism so that it can move freely. This creates small gaps where light can enter.
That doesn't mean blackout roller blinds don't work.
For many bedrooms, a well-measured standard blackout roller provides a very good level of room darkening and is completely suitable.
The question is whether that level is enough for you.
If you're particularly sensitive to light, we would normally discuss the gaps before ordering rather than discovering them afterwards.
What If You Need the Room Much Darker?
If the requirement goes beyond normal room darkening, the complete system needs more consideration.
With roller blinds, one option is a more specialised system using a cassette and side channels.
Rather than allowing the fabric edges to remain exposed, the blind operates within channels designed to reduce light entering around the sides. Depending on the system and window, this can provide substantially greater control than a standard open roller blind.
Curtains can also be specified more carefully by extending them further beyond the opening, increasing overlaps and considering how closely the fabric sits against the surrounding surfaces.
And sometimes the most practical answer is:
use both.
A blackout roller blind behind blackout or lined curtains gives you two separate layers of light control.
There is still no sensible reason to promise absolute darkness in every room. Window shape, fixing conditions, air-conditioning details, doors, glazing and other sources of light all affect the finished result.
But if someone tells us they need a room very dark, the solution should be designed around that requirement from the beginning.
Blackout Curtains vs Blackout Blinds: Which Is Better?
There isn't a useful answer without considering the room.
For a Main Bedroom
If room darkening and a softer appearance are both priorities, blackout curtains are often an excellent starting point.
They can provide generous coverage and suit the scale of larger bedroom windows.
If you prefer a cleaner appearance, a blackout roller blind may be enough. For higher blackout requirements, consider an enhanced blind system or layering.
For a Children's Bedroom or Nursery
Good room darkening can be useful for daytime sleeping, but operation and safety also matter.
If a blind uses an accessible cord or chain, child safety needs to be considered as part of the specification. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends cordless window coverings where young children are present.
Curtains, cordless systems or suitably specified motorisation may therefore be worth discussing.
For an Apartment Bedroom
Space can make a roller blind attractive.
A made-to-measure blackout roller fits neatly around the window without introducing large amounts of fabric into the room.
If neighbouring buildings create privacy concerns, blackout also provides strong visual privacy when the blind is closed.
For Large Villa Windows
Curtains often suit the proportions of large floor-to-ceiling windows, but large blinds can also work when properly specified.
For very wide or tall openings, we need to consider product size, fixing conditions and operation.
Motorisation can become particularly useful here.
For a Home Cinema or Someone Working Night Shifts
This is where we would focus less on appearance and more on controlling every realistic source of light.
A standard blackout product might not be enough.
Enhanced roller systems, generous curtain coverage or a layered solution may be more appropriate depending on the window.
What About Heat?
Customers also regularly ask whether blackout curtains or blinds will make a room cooler.
Closing window coverings during periods of strong sunlight can help reduce solar heat entering through glazing, which is why DEWA includes curtains and blinds among its summer heat-control recommendations.
But we wouldn't promise that a blackout product will solve a hot room by itself.
Glass specification, window direction, building insulation, air conditioning, fabric and installation all affect how the room performs.
If heat is the main concern rather than darkness, tell us.
In some living spaces, a sunscreen roller blind may make more sense because it helps manage strong daylight and glare while retaining some outward visibility.
What to Consider Before Choosing Blackout Curtains or Blinds
Before ordering, we would work through a few practical questions.
How dark do you actually need the room?Normal room darkening and very high blackout performance are different requirements.
Where is the light entering?Look at the complete window rather than assuming the fabric is the problem.
Do you prefer a soft or minimal appearance?Curtains become part of the interior. Roller blinds are more compact and discreet.
How large is the window?Large openings can affect both the product specification and operating method.
Is space limited?A roller blind generally occupies less room than full curtains.
Will young children use the room?Consider safe operation at the specification stage.
Manual or motorised?Motorisation can be useful for large, high or frequently operated curtains and blinds.
Has the window been professionally measured?Coverage, fixing positions, recess depth, handles and surrounding walls all affect blackout performance.
Blackout Curtains vs Blackout Blinds: Frequently Asked Questions
Which gives better blackout: curtains or blinds?
Standard blackout curtains often have an advantage in coverage because they can extend well beyond the window. A specialised blind with cassette and side channels can provide greater light control than a standard open roller. The correct answer depends on the window and required result.
Do blackout blinds block 100% of light?
The fabric can prevent light passing through it, but a standard roller blind can still allow light around its edges.
Are blackout curtains better for bedrooms?
They are often a strong choice, particularly where you want both room darkening and a softer interior finish. Roller blinds may suit customers who prefer something more compact.
Can I use blackout blinds and curtains together?
Yes. A layered solution can be very effective where greater room darkening and a finished curtain appearance are both wanted.
Do blackout curtains or blinds help with heat?
Closing window coverings against strong sun can help reduce heat entering through glazing, but the overall result depends on the window, fabric, building and installation.
Can blackout curtains and blinds be motorised?
Yes, depending on the selected track or blind system. Motorisation is particularly useful for large or difficult-to-reach windows.
What is the best option for complete darkness?
If very high room darkening is essential, don't select on fabric alone. The full installation should be assessed, including potential light gaps and whether an enhanced or layered system is needed.
So, Blackout Curtains or Blackout Blinds?
If you simply want a bedroom darker, either can work very well.
If you want a softer appearance and generous window coverage, blackout curtains may suit the room better.
If you want something neat, compact and discreet, a blackout roller blind may be the better fit.
And if darkness is particularly important, the answer may be an enhanced blind system, carefully specified curtains or both together.
The key is being clear about the result before choosing the product.
